Paddleboarding has become an increasingly popular activity. It’s a great way to get out on the water and enjoy the great outdoors without committing to a pricey boat. Paddleboards also provide excellent health benefits as well as endless entertainment. Here are some things you should know about this enjoyable pastime.
How it Works
The basics for this activity are a paddleboard, paddle and lifejacket. It is worth noting that a paddleboard is not the same as a surf or bodyboard. A lifejacket is always important when engaging in any water activities, especially for a beginner. Once you have acquired your gear, just hit the water and give it a try. There are plenty of advice videos and guides online on Youtube, or you can check into the possibility of a local paddling club. It may take a few tries to get started, but with practice, you will get comfortable.
It’s a Great Workout
Paddleboarding is a great way to exercise. Appropriate for almost all ages, standup paddleboarding gives a complete, full-body workout. It primarily targets your leg and core muscles as you keep your balance, plus your arms and shoulders work hard as you paddle. Even better, it is a very low-impact exercise, meaning it’s easy on the joints. Standup paddleboarding is also shown to promote cardiovascular health. Plus, if you get hot during your workout, you can just dip into the water to cool off.
With a wide array of options available, it should be easy to find a good choice for your situation. According to Pumped Up Sup, a wider board is good for beginners. Though slower in the water, they are easier to stand and balance on. Inflatables can also be better for balance, but some people like the feeling of a solid board better. While most beginners stick to calmer water, be aware that there is a difference between flat-water and rough-water board styles.
For starters, Chileno Bay Resort recommends that the best place to paddleboard is on a calm body of water. While rough-water paddling is popular at coastal areas, a beginner is best served learning on any relatively flat water. Lakes, streams, small rivers and other quiet spots are ideal. As standup paddleboarding has grown in popularity, many parks featuring these watery areas have designated launch areas to help people get started.
