Heading on a tropical vacation soon? Before you step foot into paradise, it is important that you understand that the sun in the tropics is significantly stronger than elsewhere in the world. For this reason, it is vital that you take the necessary steps to protect your skin. Here are three ways that you can ensure that your skin is protected while on your tropical vacation.

Minimize Direct Exposure

The most effective way to protect your skin is to minimize your direct exposure to the sun. You can achieve this in a number of ways. The sun is strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. During these hours, it is a good idea to seek the shade as much as possible. If you are at the beach during these hours, you can protect yourself by using an umbrella. You may also consider visiting the beach after the sun has decreased in intensity.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

The gold standard of sun protection is the use of sunscreen. When choosing your sunscreen, be sure to select a product with an SPF of at least 30 or higher. You also want to take care to avoid harsh and abrasive chemicals. Recent studies suggest that avobenzone reacts with chlorine in potentially harmful ways, rendering it less effective. Once avobenzone is exposed to the sun, it begins to break down in about 30 minutes. Choosing a sunscreen with all-natural ingredients will yield better results and take the worry out of what you are putting onto your skin.

Cover Up

One of the best protections that you can give yourself while out in the sun is to cover up with the appropriate clothing. The right type of clothing can work wonders when trying to block out harmful UV radiation. Dark or bright colors work the best because they are more likely to absorb harmful rays, keeping them from penetrating the skin. Thicker clothes also offer more protection than their thinner material counterparts. There are also a variety of high-tech fabrics that offer superior protection if your goal is to limit your sun exposure.

Remember that just because it is cloudy, you can still get a sunburn while vacationing in the tropics. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Taking the proper precautions to protect your skin will ensure that you have a better and safer time while in paradise.
